Long, long ago in southern China there was a beautiful girl named Yeh Shen, who, left in the care of her step-mother, is treated very badly. The festival approaches, but Yeh-Shen is left weeping at home while Stepmother and Stepsister go off dancing.
The tale of Yeh-Shen, though set in China and differing in some details, is basically the same as the familiar European fairytale of Cinderella, yet it is at least 1,000 years older than the earliest known Western version of the story.
